F. Scott Fitzgerald's poignant tale Babylon Revisited provides the basis for this film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Van Johnson as tragic, restless lovers striving to find meaning and fulfillment in the bittersweet world of fashionable post-war Paris. In the midst of celebrating VE Day, an army lieutenant (Johnson) meets two beautiful sisters, Helen and Marion (Taylor and Donna Reed), who both fall deeply in love with him. But it is Helen, the hopelessly romantic, free-spirited one who finally captures his passionate heart. Their marriage evolves into a tempestuous struggle as their needs, although identical, are never felt at quite the same time. Directed by Richard Brooks, Taylor and Johnson are joined by amazing performances from Walter Pidgeon, Eva Gabor and a young Roger Moore, who transform Fitzgerald's characters into a living expression of the hope and disillusionment that filled a war-torn Europe. |
