A stylized tumi axe is depicted in this area rug from Peru. The tumi was a ceremonial blade characteristic of ancient cultures such as the Moche, Chimu, and Inca. A typical tumi axe features a curved blade at one end, its handle often adorned with a small sculpture that depicts a legendary or historical figure. The composition on this rug is realized in a variety of colors against a body of black. Andean artisan David Laura Zanabria designs the rug, weaving it by hand from wool on an artisanal loom.
