The noble Cendrawasih bird inspires this magnificent sculpture by Wayan Agus Satya Putra. He carves the sculpture by hand from palmwood and gives it an aged finish. In the village of Raja Ampat there is a legend that claims the Cendrawasih is the incarnation of a boy called Kweiya who used to be so close and devoted to his mother that his younger brothers hated him for it. One day they pounced on Kweiya and hurt him so he ran away. Though he wanted to stay and look after his mother, he didn't want his brothers to get into trouble for what they had done. He prayed and prayed, and finally the gods transformed him into Cendrawasih so that he may fly and look after his mother while also be able to fly away should his brothers want to hurt him again.
