Dressed as Adelita, a general term for women of the countryside who fought in the Mexican Revolution, Catrina carries a rifle on her shoulder. She wears an embroidered blouse with ruffles, a wide sombrero, and braids her long hair. Fernando Sarvide pays tribute to these courageous women in a display jigsaw puzzle, crafted by hand. The word catrina is widely used in Mexico to mean elegant and polished. Lithographer Jose Guadalupe Posadas created the skeletal Catrina, who was later immortalized in the murals of Diego Rivera.
