The plaza at the village center is the ideal place for running into friends and neighbors in the middle of a busy day. A man and a woman carry heavy loads as they go about their chores in a painting by Ismael Díaz. He works with acrylics on a ceramic metate or metatl, as the Aztec people refer to it. It was designed for grinding maze, seeds and grains by rolling the stone up and down the slightly convex and rugged surface. The metate is still used in many Mexican households.
