The strength, power and rhythm of Capoeira exude from this extraordinary sculpture by Rodrigo Saramago. Proportion is skewed to evidence the man's developed muscles as he defies gravity in the stand on two supports position. Saramago sculpts this piece with an expert blend of marble and resin to highlight the skill and dexterity required of a Capoeira master. Capoeira is a form of martial art developed by slaves in Brazil. Specialized movements were disguised as a form of dance to avoid suspicion from oppressors. It is said that Capoeira was first used in battle by Zumbi in the slave revolt at Quilombo dos Palmares.
