Standing proud like a recently unearthed treasure, Akuaba symbolizes life. She is the legendary fertility doll carried by Ashanti women when wishing to conceive. Ibrahim Mohammed carves her image from local nyame dua wood, expertly replicating the artistic styles and customs of the Ashanti people. To them, a half circle represents female fertility whereas the oval symbolizes women's cleansing power. Ashanti women are obsessive about cleansing and teach their daughters how to be sweet-smelling with forest herbs. Adorned with earrings and necklaces, Mohammed finishes this sculpture with clay, sand and powder to achieve an antique, rugged finish.
