Saint Rose of Lima is crowned with the fragrant flowers of her name. Born on August 30, 1586, Isabel Flores de Oliva was the first American to be canonized, in 1671. Each year the devout make a pilgrimage to the chapel in Santa Rosa de Quives where she lived and worshipped. Alejandro Chávez crafts the wood box to house this retablo, or diorama, and paints it in bright colors. The figures are carefully modeled from ceramic plaster and painted by hand.
