This colorful box opens to reveal a nativity scene. Alejandro Chávez creates this beautiful retablo, or diorama. Dressed in traditional Andean clothes, Mary and Joseph welcome the newborn Christ child, while shepherds and kings also adore the baby. Chávez crafts the frame from wood and fashions the figures of ceramic plaster, painted by hand. He names the piece Bethlehem in Lucanas for a town in the province of Ayacucho.
