Moon, star and fish motifs painted in oils jump out from a batik-like background of dappled pink, red and yellow. The tradition of saa paper dates back two hundred years ago. Apparently, Burmese hill tribe villagers were the first to notice that the bark of the mulberry tree peels away naturally. They found that they could use it to create a beautiful paper without destroying the tree. The umbrellas created by Nikom make use of locally available saa paper and are further embellished with bamboo spines and hand-painted with intricate designs in oil paints. Hang the parasol from the ceiling to add a touch of Thailand to any décor, or use it to block the sun, as in its traditional use.
