Carved by hand from native sese wood, this handsome mask is an original design by Awudu Saaed. The young woman wears a tall headdress and braids her long hair. Enhanced with aluminum and copper wire, the piece depicts a girl of Nigeria's Fula tribe. Such masks are used to thank the gods of when a female child is born, the artisan says. The people ask for long life, wisdom, blessings and protection for the child.
