Despite the stern features, this mask is named Basa, a Senufo word for Happy. It is carved from sese wood and polished to a sheen, with applications of white clay for contrast. Representative of the Côte d'Ivoire's Senufo people, it is worn to celebrate happy moments, says artisan Salihu Ibrahim.
