Colorful motifs cover the walls of a home in Bihar. Known as a kohavar yantra, the room is painted by a newlywed couple and depicts the different elements of married life. The fish and turtles are fertility symbols. This painting represents peace, love and fertility for a newly married couple to represent a peaceful co-existence with the rest of the villagers. It also signifies a happy married life, says artist Devendra Kumar Jha. As each Madhubani painting is an individual creation, each is unique. Colors and motifs may vary slightly from that pictured.
