A millenary icon of Thai beauty, the portrait of a woman from the northern region embellishes these cushion covers. Lanna women are renowned for their exceptional beauty and graceful elegance; they are traditionally portrayed under a parasol, becoming a national symbol under the phrase Mae Yin Kang Jong (Woman opens her umbrella). Alaya Cholprasertsuk's design depicts the lady surrounded by soft and warming hues using batik on cotton, with a button closure at the back. These cushion covers are ideal for a room of feminine inspiration. Batik is a fabric art in which cloth is stretched on a wooden frame and a design is sketched in pencil. Then a mixture of melted wax and resin (70%/30%) is painted onto areas where color is not desired and the fabric is dipped in a solution of reactive dye, water, salt, and sodium bicarbonate. When the fabric is crumpled into the dying solution, the wax cracks, creating an attractive network of fine lines. The wax is removed and process is repeated for each color utilized. Finally, the cloth is washed and rinsed to remove any excess dye.
