Of Chancay inspiration, this stylized masks bears with it the mark of history and the survival of traditions kept alive by proud artisans such as Jaime Zapata. Settled in the Chancay Valley between 900 and 1400 A.D., 50 miles (80 km) north of Lima, the Chancay culture included fine ceramists and textile artisans whose general style was characterized by simple and sober designs. Decorated with a jute crown and tresses, the mask is made of crushed and recycled paper placed over a mold. This Chancay mask will add an original rustic accent to any home interior. Note: Some contemporary artisans including Zapata draw inspiration from pre-Hispanic iconography in the crafting of their products. However, they also like to blend in their unique style and vision resulting in stylized versions that serve to express the human emotions evoked by ancient Peruvian cultures.
